Guitar Workshop…

We have a great classical guitar maker here in our village I made a video some years back this is Stephan Schlemper’s workshop…

Lazuli & Jesper Munk in Worpswede

Two great concerts last week in the Worpswede Musichall. On the Friday Lazuli an amazing French band then the next day Jesper Munk and his band. Jesper is only 22 years of age but sings and played with the sound and confidence of performers twice his age, a great drummer  and bass player who really compliment his style add to the overall excitement. See you all again soon I hope…

Together Again

Blue & Dennis…together again.

Blue & Dennis...together again.

Blue & Dennis…together again.

Would You Spend 8 hours here?

Production companies book venues for their artists to play in but never consider what conditions are like for them backstage. Granted we all get paid but would they work from an office like this?

And it was stinking...

And it was stinking…Oh and only 1 toilet, 2 cubicles shared male & female with very little between for about 30 people…

Flash birthday suit

Last night in Studio Nord, Bremen, I and many friends had a great time celebrating the 60th birthday of Stefan Stoppok. As could be expected many friends are musicians so there was no shortage of great music.

Tour Update

Tour Update –

Well after a meal in a Burger King, the only place open at 12.30am, we traveled the usual 2 hours to the hotel which was situated in the woods just outside the quaint German village of Bad Sexunfahrtin. I was amazed to see a lot of fans appearing from the trees as we approached some looked as if they had been waiting for some time. I asked why they were mostly dressed in hot pants and thigh length boots and our tour manager said it was usual now for young fans to adopt a uniform in support of their band and these were called the “Bee G stringers” some of them looked pretty old though to me.

The hotel ‘The Wellcum In’, (if they are going to use an English name why don’t they learn to spell it correctly?) looked interesting, bathed in it’s glow of red lights and a sign that said ’10 euros per hour’, expensive for 1 night, there didn’t seem to be many guests just a few black Range Rovers with dark tinted windows and guys smoking some large, quite pleasant smelling, cigarettes.

Some of the ‘Bee G stringers’ came running as we arrived but our tour manager sent them to the road crews room, for a backstage pass I think. We were given a rather sticky room key on the ground floor and when I asked what time breakfast was and he looked amazed and said most didn’t stay for breakfast.

Well the room was interesting, dimly lit again with a red glow which was enhanced by the mirrors everywhere, even on the ceiling! When we pulled back the heavy rubber bed cover there were no sheets, I called reception and he said they were an extra 10 euros and he would send someone along with them and to pay them in cash.

We finally got into bed and I switched on the television and was asked if we wanted to make our own video, strange! I tried to find a news channel but they all seemed to be showing sex educational movies, I couldn’t hear the TV very well as our room seemed to be next to the fitness and exercise room, strange how many people seem to workout at night, lots of groaning like they were out of breath very quickly..

We didn’t get much sleep and I hope we don’t get to stay in a ‘Wellcum In’ again… Lots of noise coming from the road crews room as we were leaving and the girls must have been very rich as they kept giving their money to their drivers in the black Range Rovers…

More to come…

Massachusetts 2016

Ok! I know I’ve neglected this site and not posted anything recently but again a brand new up-dated Massachusetts with the Italian Bee Gees is now on the road.

Amen Corner 1967

This year it is even more spectacular than the past as we now have, along with a new cast of actors, dancers and storyline, Dennis Bryon, original drummer from the Bee Gees, one of my oldest friends, he’s actually younger than me but you know what I mean. He was also in Amen Corner and my very first band in Cardiff, Brother John and the Witnesses. We, as always, aim to continue the popularity of the Bee Gees and their music and hope that the legend continues to gain more fans…

Musichall 20 years

Massachusetts 2014

After a very successful tour of Germany in 2013 with the Egiziano Brothers, otherwise known as ‘The Italian Bee Gees’ we have embarked on another tour ‘Massachusetts 2014’ the first part is now over and the response from the audiences has been fantastic. We feel a lot happier with the production this time having learnt a lot in 2013. One review said “The best Bee Gees since The Bee Gees” which is really encouraging for the brothers. The band ladies and dancers have, as usual been amazing.

Rehearsals for Bee Gees Spirits Tour

Nice comments here from Maurice
The Bee Gees toured with their band, formed in 1975 and which consisted of Dennis Bryon on drums, Blue Weaver on various keyboards, and Alan Kendall on lead guitar.
This band was more than just a group of musicians playing together. As Maurice once said: “They’re part of the family. Having a band that knows how we play and sing and write has really been one of the keys to our sound.”

Bluebottle

The Bluebottle hand puppet advert

The Bluebottle hand puppet advert

My name ‘Blue’ came from a cartoon character in the famous “Goon Show” the character was payed by Peter Sellers and was named ‘Bluebottle’.  See this site for more details http://www.thegoonshow.net/. It was originally a radio show but in the early sixties the ‘TeleGoons’ were created. Luckily for me people shortened it to just Blue.

The name was given to me by Gary Cooper (real name Edward) Charlotte Church’s grandfather. He played sax with a local Cardiff group called ‘The Sect Maniacs” and he thought I looked like the character. Obviously as you can see there is absolutely no resemblance but thank you Gary as the name stuck and was good for my career as people always remembered it.

There was a song called ‘Bluebottle Blues’ I will get the original track and post here sometime.

The original Bluebottle hand puppet

The original Bluebottle hand puppet. Don't know why they put a skirt on me but I suppose you wouldn't be able to get your hand up my trousers.

I’ve got those “When I say I trust you I don’t want to be drownded ’cause I do not like those kind of game” Blues.
I don’t like naughty tricks that go sploo gee splat
(They say harm can come to a young lad like that)
And I do not like explosions that blow me back for Christmas
Out of my el-seaside bel-bottom shoes
I don’t like being wetted by nasty April showers
And I do not like being nutted by Eifel and Blackpool towers
So I do not want to be drowned, nutted, deaded, hitted, splatted pledded!
I don’t like that kind of type blues — I don’t like that
I’ve got them Bluebottle Blues.

Well now the truth is finally out so all enjoy……

The Layla Piano

9ft Baldwin piano in Criteria Studios MiamiThis is the 9ft Baldwin piano in Criteria studios Miami. This piano has featured on many hits but the most famous must be the fantastic coda on ‘Layla” played by Jim Gordon, yes! the drummer. Jim apparently was playing this chord sequence when Eric walked in and said it must go on the end of Layla so about 5 days later the coda was recorded, originally in C but was varispeeded up slightly afterwards as was the original song.
This piano was used on practically all Bee Gee’s songs (that used a piano) from 1975 – 1979. On ‘Tragedy’ there are 9 tracks of what we called ‘Elephant Piano’ (piano heavilly compressed and gated so no attack and just sustain). The tone was very bright as all the hammers were injected regularly with silicon to make them harder and thus produce a louder brighter tone, not always easy to play especially on delicate ballads (there was also a beautiful old Steinway with a softer tone).

Pet Shop Boys, Me, 2 Fairlights+Some Great Old Keyboards do “TOGWT”

Updated video….

The Pet Shop Boys first live gig was at the ICA in London (can’t remember date in’80’s.. just saw ’86 on this video so around there) starring in “The Max Headroom Show”

I programmed 2 Fairlights for the backing and myself Chris and Neil also played keyboards it was definately the one and only time Chris played Trombone on stage and they/we sounded great. I also did the same for them on “The Old Grey Whistle Test” Wow! don’t believe this just found video on YouTube.I was behind the bank of screens with a mixing desk sending my mix to the control room. Big panic just before the show went out live as someone tripped over one of the mains cables to the Fairlights and I had to do a panic soldering iron repair.

My Yamaha DX1, Technics PX1 as well as my Fairlights being used also.

Also this same night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XL2CsXZgKg

The Blue Gees

This is one of the few videos that actually has some great shots of all the band. All my buttons broke off my shirt but the show must go on!

Platinum

Saturday Night Fever Platinum 8 track – the only one

This was the only album to ever achieve platinum status for an 8-track cartridge.
For my younger readers this was a system initially for a car it was cassette based 3/4inch tape running at three and three quarter inches per second.
This was superior to a cassette system which only ran at one and seven eights per second and the tape was half the size but like the betamax and VHS battle cassette won and 8-track dissapeared but some were incorporated into hi-fi systems.
So to sell 1 million of these was some achievement.
